Born in Edinburgh in 1974, Richard Baker is a graduate of Aberdeen University with an MA (Hons) degree in English Literature.

After completing his degree he became a Scottish Press Officer for Help the Aged.

In this role he successfully raised the profile of the charity in the media and campaigned on a range of issues affecting older people.

This included pressing for the introduction of free personal care for older people, as well as campaigning for help for poorer pensioners and tackling fuel poverty, which is a particular problem for many older people.

Following this, Richard held the post of Scotland’s President of the National Union of Students.

NUS Scotland's work is focused on further and higher education, and the interests of students and their educational environment.

It provides a national platform for representation and campaigning, and deals with scores of organisations on a Scottish, UK and international level.

Throughout his time with the NUS he led a successful campaign to scrap tuition fees and reintroduce grants to improve access for poorer students into further and higher education.
