Government’s Still in Slow Lane on Tackling Haudagain Congestion

15 January 2008

North-East Labour MSP Richard Baker has today called for the SNP Government to speed up its efforts in tackling the congestion at the Haudagain roundabout.

He is disappointed that in parliamentary answers given to him today the minister Stewart Stevenson has given no indication as to when work on improvements will begin.

However, the MSP has welcomed the indication that a flyover at the Haudagain is still an option that can be considered by the Steering Group for the new report.

Baker hopes that this means that a flyover has not been ruled out.

The MSP has continuously campaigned in parliament for action to tackle the severe congestion at the roundabout with one suggestion that a flyover should be considered as a serious option.

Responding to the parliamentary answers received Richard Baker said: "We had been promised greater urgency by the Scottish Government on this issue but again these series of answers only confirms that this issue is far from being resolved.

"We need to have a clear indication of when we can expect work on improving the Haudagain to begin and I am disappointed yet again that we don’t have that from the minister.

"However, I welcome the fact that a flyover has not been ruled out at this point and hope that a flyover will be an option that will go out for a consultation.

"At the end of the day the key issue is that Haudagain causes unacceptable levels of congestion in Aberdeen, is bad for business and for commuters and this new set of delays does nothing to serve the city."
