Baker on Dundee University Cuts

Responding to job losses at Dundee University, Labour's Higher Education spokesman Richard Baker said:

"The news of job cuts at Dundee University is perhaps not surprising given the very poor funding settlement for universities from the Scottish Government, but is nevertheless extremely disappointing for a university which in recent years has become a world leading centre of excellence in medical and life science research.

"We are now beginning to see the full cost of the SNP's refusal to give our universities the funding they need.

We have already pointed out in Parliament that the extra £10 million universities were awarded to compensate for poor funding settlement would in fact only meet half of a £20 million funding gap for them to meet pay agreements already made with staff.

"It is not only Dundee and other universities, their students and staff who will suffer because of the reckless approach of the SNP but the Scottish economy as a whole.

"That is why we need a full independent review of university funding and more immediately action taken to ensure we do not see more damaging cuts in teaching posts as we have seen at Dundee."
